2 Miles A Day – 30 Day Challenge – December [2013]

It’s tough to believe that another month has flown by again but it’s the first day of December which means it’s time for a new monthly challenge. Last month was an easy success with a goal to write at least 750 words a day. This month I want to set the bar a little higher so that’s actually a challenge. Right in the middle of the biggest eating holidays and the beginning of Michigan’s frozen winter, it also seems like a good idea to make the challenge a little physical. So this month I’m going to start walking.

I figure I walk at least 3 miles a day with my everyday activities and I’d like to walk an extra 2 miles. On average, it takes about 2,000 steps to walk one mile so I need to walk an additional 4,000 steps over and above what I already walk. I could take one of several different approaches to set the daily challenge.

Option One – 30 Minute Walks

I know it takes me about 15 minutes to walk a mile so I could take Sadie (my dog) for a half an hour walk, weather permitting. I can walk in the freezing cold but I wouldn’t force her to do it so. She wouldn’t sign-up for the challenge so she can stay home if it’s too cold. ;)

Option Two – The Measured Mile

The second option, for measuring the challenge, could be to mark a one mile spot using my pickup and walk that round trip every day.

Option Three – Pedometer

Option three involves this cool pedometer my brother gave me. It measures and records steps, distance, calories, time, and even speed. It looks like I’ll need to walk about 10,000 steps a day to fulfill my thirty day challenge.

So I think I’ll go with a mix of the two measured mile and the pedometer. I’ll use the one mile mark to insure the pedometer is accurate and, if it is, I can diversify my route whenever I want.

I will say that if two miles seems too easy, I will increase the challenge. I love podcasts so I can probably whip out two miles in a single episode.

I’ll keep you posted and feel free to join me in this 30 day challenge or any in the future. I’d love to hear about any challenges you are in and if you have any cool ideas for future 30 day challenges, I could use some fresh ideas.
