My New Samsung Instinct

Samsung Instinct™ by Sprint I’ve had my new cell phone for almost a month now and I like it so much I decided to blog about it. It’s the Samsung Instinct™ by Sprint. I wanted a feature-rich touchscreen smart phone like the iPhone but I didn’t want to switch to AT&T. I had Nextel for five or six years until I switched to Sprint and I like the service.

I’m old enough to remember when phone booths still had rotary dialers and cost a dime so it’s pretty amazing what these phones do now.

The Samsung Instinct™ has more bells and whistles than I’ll ever use but I’m really finding that it’s an invaluable tool. I’ve been carrying a laptop with me when I get more than fifty feet from the home (Yeah, I’m addicted) and it’s pretty time consuming to boot the computer up, access the net just to see if there’s anything pressing in my email. I don’t want someone to wait hours for a HelpDesk answer for example. Now I can check my email within seconds using my cell phone. I only need to boot up the laptop if there is something important that I need to take care of. The Instinct does have internet access but is limited to what can be done.

A couple other features I’m finding very helpful is the camera phone and the ability to upload shots to my Flickr account within minutes. It’s just a 2.0 MP camera and camcorder but I’m pretty impressed with the picture quality. I can fill my 22″ monitor with wallpaper from the camera phone with almost no distortion. The color and crisp pictures are nothing you would expect from a cell phone. Here are a few photos I’ve taken so far: Camera Phone Shots

If you are considering a touchscreen smart phone I would recommend you research the iPhone if you like AT&T. I say that because it’s more popular and probably a better phone. Most apps. available are for the iPhone and even though I’ve never used one I’m still a little envious. If you’re like me and want to stick with Sprint than I don’t think you would be very disappointed with the Samsung Instinct™.

Here are a few of the Instinct’s features:

  • Stereo Bluetooth®
  • GPS Navigation
  • Live TV
  • Email with both POP3 and corporate email
  • Calendar and Scheduler
  • Texting and Instant Messaging
  • 2.0 MP Camera and Camcorder
  • Internet access with an Internet HTML Browser
  • external memory (microSD)
  • Clock with alarm and Worldtime
  • Calculator
  • Memo book
  • Voice memo & Voice mail
  • Embedded JAVA™ Games and JAVA™ Download
  • Music player with music Library

Nice!! I have not had a cell phone for two years so am well behind in what is going on…. All I know if I want an iPhone badly! But this looks like a nice phone too and it has the touch screen and all. Just the limited net access you mention is a small turn off for me.

  2. Hi Forest, I can’t imagine not having my phone for two years. That seems good in a way. By limited net access I mean the small screen and I haven’t been able to log into accounts such as admin side of blogs and such. Certain media doesn’t display either such as videos and sound. I’m not sure if IPhone does or not but I’m sure they will once things advance a little.

  3. I love technology, so I always want to learn about new devices. Although I love my Apple Iphone, this Samsung seems like a great option for those who don’t want to switch to AT&T.

It’s great to be able to check your email on the fly, isn’t it?! I love that-I too am addicted to my computer and don’t like people to have to wait for a response from me, so it’s great to be able check my email and be alerted to new email from my phone!

  4. Hi Onna, It is nice to check our email within seconds. Because I get so much email in my main Gmail account, I used Gmail Filters to forward certain emails to a dedicated Gmail account. That way I can see new emails without scanning a ton of emails. For example, emails from PayPal are forwarded so when I get a new member to our ad tracking site so I can approve them within a reasonable amount of time. The same with emails from our HelpDesk. It’s hard to understand how I went this far without it.

That looks pretty good Brian. I have a question for you though. How expensive is it to connect to the internet via the mobile phone? I always thought it to cost way more than a normal call and so I never bothered. Maybe it’s different for you guys in the States.

While I’m here, I don’t know what happened but I’ve lost all the data on Cool Blog Links. If it’s not too much of a hassle it would be nice if you added your blog again. Thanks mate.

  6. Hi Sire, I think I pay about $140/month for two phones. We get unlimited everything including text, video mail, gps, basically everything the phone is capable of.

I just re-registered with Cool Blog Links. I used the same username so the code didn’t change.

Cool, thanks for doing that. That sounds like a pretty good deal you have there> I will have to see if we have anything that can compare with that Down Under. I doubt it though as you guys have a much bigger market.

  8. Just an update on my Samsung Instinct. I’m was very excited to discover (after all this time) that I can view YouTube videos right on my phone. I didn’t realize it until I accidentally clicked a link while checking my email. It was of a YouTube video and it played perfectly right on my phone. Who needs an MP3 player with technology like this?

Cool phone you got there Brian. In the family, only my wife has this addiction to cell phones. She buys a new model, then after a few months she gets tired of it, she gives it to me and buys a new one for herself. She’s up-to-date, and I’m always about a year behind.

That youtube access feature there is cool. You know, it has become a habit of mine when I am down to run to youtube and watch funny videos. It never fails to lift my spirits up. With a phone like that in my possession, I’ll probably never have any more ‘down’ moments. :)

  10. Hi Noel, I dropped it yesterday and I caught myself saying a prayer as I picked it up. I was fully prepared to start crying like a baby in front of dozens of strangers but I got lucky – not even a scratch.

I love my phone but the more I see those iPhone commercials the more I want one. I’m considering going with AT&T just to get one.

You’re wife sounds like a smart lady :)

  11. Brian, I too loved my phone for quite a while. But now seeing it’s lack of support for apps I am disappointed. I am ready to move onto the Palm Pre :)

For now the Instinct is okay but boy do I see it’s limitations when compared to other phones.

I will be sticking with Sprint however, I get great service out here in the country and we get a great employee discount that I cannot pass up for the unlimited everything plan WOOT!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the phone too.
