Yahoo Price Gouging @ $34.95/year

yahoo_domains.gifIs Yahoo! so out of touch that they think it’s fair to charge their loyal customers over three times as much for domain renewals as other Registrars? As of July 1, 2008 Yahoo has increased its annual domain registration fee from $9.95 to $34.95.

The price increase is only for domain renewals. New domains are still just $9.95 per year so they can still lure in unsuspecting victims for later price gouging.

With over a hundred domains and about thirty registered with Yahoo, I’ve been transferring my domains to PowerPipe.com for $8.88 a year. Thirty domains at $34.95 is a whopping $419.40 a year and it was just $106.56 to move them away from Yahoo’s out-of-touch hands. I’m not taking it personal, it just business. It is hard to understand Yahoo’s reasoning. Perhaps they just want out of the domain registration business. Maybe they just feel like they have built their business to a level where they can afford to loose loyal customers. What ever their reasoning, I highly recommend looking elsewhere for your domain registration needs.

Note of Caution: Yahoo domain subscriptions renew automatically for another year at the end of the registration term. If you transfer your domains to another registrar you will still need to cancel your payment ‘Cancel Plan‘ agreement or they will gladly charge your credit card. They charged me $104.85 for three domains a month after the domains were transferred. It took over an hour on the phone to get two of the renewals refunded. Apparently Yahoo’s customer service reps are limited to how much they can refund. Now I have to wait until a supervisor reviews my refund request before they’ll credit my card with the third $34.95.

You know years ago Yahoo charged like $25 a year for new domains. When other domain providers started popping up they dropped.

To charge someone $34.95 for a domain renewal is ridiculous.

I use GoDaddy for all of my domains and have a coupon to get them for 6.95 a year.

[...] It’s not really site news but I’ve been spending a lot of time moving domains out of Yahoo!s price gouging hands. At  $34.95/year for domain renewals I won’t be doing much business with Yahoo. I’m down to 105 domain so at least it’s not as bad as it would have been a few years ago. [...] use them to buy it. As of now you will be slapped silly with a crazy $34.95/year renewal fee. [See Yahoo Price Gouging @ $34.95/year] If you are buying the domain just to sell it later I recommend GoDaddy.com. Due to the whole Mike [...]

In few words, what an abuse from Yahoo. I had a domain name with them. When I saw the announcement my first thought was to cancel that domain, and I did it. Of course, it was of not much importance to me or I would have transferred it instead.

I know Jesus, it’s hard to understand. It’s a very successful site worth billions so I guess they know what they’re doing but it sure doesn’t make sense to me. Why charge 300% the going rate for the same service. I hope others don’t follow suit. Wow, I wonder if that’s that they are counting on – setting the bar a lot higher.
