Is Yahoo! so out of touch that they think it’s fair to charge their loyal customers over three times as much for domain renewals as other Registrars? As of July 1, 2008 Yahoo has increased its annual domain registration fee from $9.95 to $34.95.
The price increase is only for domain renewals. New domains are still just $9.95 per year so they can still lure in unsuspecting victims for later price gouging.
With over a hundred domains and about thirty registered with Yahoo, I’ve been transferring my domains to PowerPipe.com for $8.88 a year. Thirty domains at $34.95 is a whopping $419.40 a year and it was just $106.56 to move them away from Yahoo’s out-of-touch hands. I’m not taking it personal, it just business. It is hard to understand Yahoo’s reasoning. Perhaps they just want out of the domain registration business. Maybe they just feel like they have built their business to a level where they can afford to loose loyal customers. What ever their reasoning, I highly recommend looking elsewhere for your domain registration needs.
Note of Caution: Yahoo domain subscriptions renew automatically for another year at the end of the registration term. If you transfer your domains to another registrar you will still need to cancel your payment ‘Cancel Plan‘ agreement or they will gladly charge your credit card. They charged me $104.85 for three domains a month after the domains were transferred. It took over an hour on the phone to get two of the renewals refunded. Apparently Yahoo’s customer service reps are limited to how much they can refund. Now I have to wait until a supervisor reviews my refund request before they’ll credit my card with the third $34.95.
