Honest Book Review – Living Low Carb by Jonny Bowden
Several years ago I lost 70 pounds on a low-carb diet. Wow did I feel great! Forward three years later (today) and I’ve “found” 45 of those pounds I lost.
Now I’m on a mission to take that fat off and keep it off. I know low-carb works and the book, “Living Low Carb: Controlled-Carbohydrate Eating for Long-Term Weight Loss” by Jonny Bowden is where I’m starting my research. This post is my honest opinion, and review, of the book – not low carb dieting in general.
What you will get from the book – Living Low Carb: Controlled-Carbohydrate Eating for Long-Term Weight Loss
The author, Jonny Bowden, does a fantastic job of explaining things. Things like exactly what low carb means, what are the differences in carbs, fats, proteins, and sugars.
Jonny Bowden, PhD., CNS, covers some very helpful tips such as which cooking oils are best to use and why.
In a nutshell, you’ll get the “why“. Dr. Bowden, known as Dr. Jonny, is great at explaining the “why” as much as the “what.”
Jonny Bowden talks a good deal about diabetes. You’ll find helpful advice on curbing your appetite, controlling carb and sugar cravings, and you will even get some tips on helping constipation.
An Example of What You’ll Learn In The Book
Did you know there are many different names on product (food) labels for “sugar?” I guess I did, but it wasn’t until I read “Living Low Carb: Controlled-Carbohydrate Eating for Long-Term Weight Loss” that I understood what we’re up against here.
I hate to sound like a conspiracist here, but many food manufacturers don’t want you to know there’s as much sugar in their products as there really are so they can legally combine several names such as:
✔ Corn syrup
✔ Corn sweetener
✔ HFCS (High-Fructose Corn Syrup)
✔ Invert sugar
✔ And many other names for SUGAR
By breaking the sugars into different ingredients, you, the consumer, don’t realize exactly how much sugar you’ll consume by eating the product. You’re, of course, more likely to buy something if you don’t know the main ingredient or one of the main ingredients is sugar.
What you won’t get out of Living Low Carb: Controlled-Carbohydrate Eating for Long-Term Weight Loss
I’m afraid “Living Low Carb” isn’t going to offer clear and precise instruction on what to do. At least not in a usable, “go out and lose weight right now” kind of way.
By that I mean, Dr. Jonny Bowden will go over a ton of diets and theories but you won’t get a single diet spelled out just for you. He covers what must be every major low carb diet available, giving a brief description, along with his advice and input, and allows you to decide what is best for your body and your situation.

The damn book doesn’t seem available on Kindle. Seriously? Come on, it’s the age of digital and you have to buy this book in hardcover or paperback? You can get it in Audible as well, which was my choice.

Bottom Line – What This Book Is
Living Low Carb: Controlled-Carbohydrate Eating for Long-Term Weight Loss is a great place to start if you’re thinking about a low carb diet or just want to learn more about low carb dieting. The book gives you the understanding behind low carb dieting. It clears up many of the arguments and myths that we hear about low carb diets.
Living Low Carb will cover the major low carb diets and let you decide which to try. Personally, I prefer a simpler method – lead me to the pond and tell me to drink. What’s the problem with that? First, we’re all different with different needs and situations. Also, isn’t that exactly how we got into this situation to begin with?
